Monthly Reading Wrap-Up: May 2025
Hello, everyone! June is here already, and I'm pretty excited about my summer reading. But right now, it's time for the May reading wrap-up. The month has been pretty weird rating-wise, as I've had some highs and more lows and disappointments.
Books I've Completed in May
- Greek Lessons - Han Kang: This is one of the best books I've read this year, and probably my favourite Han Kang novel (along with The White Book). Even though I hadn't been planning to, I wrote a review where you can see what I thought about it in more detail.
- The Sleepless - Nuzo Onoh: This month I was in the mood for horror, and I thought I'd pick up this book that has been sitting on my shelves for years. Even though it had some interesting elements, it lost me after the midway point.
- I Who Have Never Known Men - Jaqueline Harpman: I'm not going to lie, the hype got me and I picked up this book. Luckily, this was one of the cases where the hype was justified and it's one of the books that I'm definitely going to be rereading. You can read my thoughts on it in my review.
- The Dream Hotel - Laila Lalami: This is THE disappointment of the year! I have been meaning to pick this book up since I've first heard about it. However, this is one of the books that the concept was stronger than the actual execution. Unfortunately, I didn't work for me.
- Weyward - Emilia Hart: This was my bookclub's pick for this month. Unfortunately, this was also one of the books that didn't work for me. All three stories felt underdeveloped, and ultimately, I failed to feel connected with none of the characters.
- Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made - Jason Schreier: My nonfiction of the month was all about how video games are made. Some of the stories were more interesting than others. The one I liked the most was the story of how Halo Wars was made.
- Antidote to Venom - Freeman Wills Crofts: This was actually a reread. Some years ago, I'd received a copy from Netgalley, and I had written a review. This month, I was looking for an audiobook, and when I saw it, I thought I'd give it another go to see if I'd change my mind. My feelings were more or less the same.
Books I'm Currently Reading
- Confessions of a Mask - Yukio Mishima: A Japanese classic, is anyone surprised that I'd pick it up? The truth is that I'm about to finish this book, and it's the best way to begin pride month.
- You, Again - Kate Goldbeck: Even though this book is associated with autumn, I felt like listening to the audiobook. It's going to be a great palate cleanser before I move into the heavier books I've planned on reading this summer.
What did you read in May, and what are you currently reading?
