Monthly Reading Wrap-Up: April 2025
Hello, everyone! April seemed to pass so fast, and now it's time for another monthly reading wrap-up. This month, I had plenty of time to read because of the Easter vacations, so I have a lot of books to talk about. Since I was in my hometown, I had access to our family library. For this reason, you are also going to notice many Greek classics among the books I've completed.
Books I've Completed in March
- Ερασιτέχνης Επαναστάτης - Apostolos Doxiadis: I started this month strong by finishing this brick of a book, which I had started reading in February. The title roughly translates to "Amateur Rebel" and it captured a historical and political time in Greece that I didn't know much about.
- Famous Last Words - Gillian McAllister: This was one of my most-anticipated mystery/thrillers of the year. However, it didn't live up to the hype and you can read my thoughts on the review I've posted.
- Η Αγάπη Άργησε μια Μέρα - Lili Zografou: This is a short novel (more of a novella) that is considered a modern classic in Greek literature. However, I can't describe how much I hated it - it's probably the worst book I've read this year. There isn't an English translation of it, but the title roughly translates to "Love was a day late".
- Anthology of Love Poems: Then, I wanted to try the online platform of the Greek National Library. Even though the collection is pretty limited, I found this collection of love poems. As in every anthology, some of them were amazing and some were disappointing.
- Jingo - Terry Pratchett: I'm on my Discworld journey, and I'm happy to announce that Jingo is one of the best book I've read so far. I'm looking forward to reading more of these books!
- Everything Is Tuberculosis - John Green: The nonfiction of the month was a highly anticipated book. It was very interesting and a great introduction to this topic. You can read my review to find out what I thought about it in more detail.
- Comfort Me with Apples - Catherynne M. Valente: At that point, I was craving some horror. Comfort me with apples was an amazing read and an interesting take on the creation myth.
- Αγέλαστη Άνοιξη - Menelaos Lountemis: This is yet another Greek classic, which is the third part of a series. I loved it (as I do every book by this author), and I still have one more installment to complete it. There is no English translation, but the title roughly translates to "Unsmiling spring".
- Ο Δωδεκάλογος του Γύφτου - Kostis Palamas: This was my poetry book club's pick for the month of April. It's one of the classics in Greek literature, and there is an English translation under the title "Twelve Words of the Gypsy".
- Off the Beaten Path - Eloise Corvo: This book was an ARC I got via NetGalley. It was a cozy mystery with a great park setting, which worked as a palate cleanser. You can read my review here.
- Extraordinary Tales - Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares: While I was searching in our home library, I found this really short anthology by the two Argentinian authors I'm very interested in. At first, I thought it was a collection of their stories, but it actually is an anthology of texts they have selected. The stories are between a few lines and a couple of pages long, and they were hit or miss.
- The Wood at Midwinter - Susanna Clarke: Finally, I ended my month on this really really short story, as I would have to travel back and I didn't want to start something longer. However, the book felt too short even for a short story. Plus, I didn't realize that it was a Christmas story, and not just a winter one.
